Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) seeks a graduate or undergraduate Student Intern for experimental research assignments. NREL is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The candidate will assist with experimental studies in the catalytic production of sustainable aviation fuels and evaluating the impacts of variations in feedstock composition, catalyst, and process conditions on product distributions and fuel properties. Interdisciplinary collaboration and a desire to advance our understanding at the intersection of fundamental science and industrial application is paramount.

Interns working in this area will conduct small-scale experiments involving sample preparation, assisting in catalytic upgrading experiments, product analysis using gas chromatography, and analysis of the collected data for the estimation of relevant parameters.

This intern will perform experiments using a laboratory batch reactor and pack-bed reactor, conduct benchtop wet chemistry techniques and separations, and analyze the resulting data. The successful candidate will display an ability to conduct laboratory experiments, sometimes with minimal supervision, with the utmost regard to safety. The candidate will communicate their work results in variety of formats, including verbal updates, written reports, and graphic presentations. The ideal candidate will be detail and safety-oriented, a fast learner, and have the ability to follow established experimental protocols. An ability to learn new techniques and communicate clearly is required.

The ideal intern candidate will be pursuing or recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related discipline with a strong desire to work in a laboratory setting and gain experience in biofuels research is preferred.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student invested in the NREL mission who desires relevant laboratory experience in preparation for graduate school or a career in the biofuels or chemical industries.


Basic Qualifications Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week) Annual Salary Range: $31,600 – $50,600

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component.
